 WILLOW by Joan Armatrading

Joan Armatrading, MBE, is a three-time Grammy Award nominee who received an Ivor Novello Award for ‘Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection’ in 1996. Her music career spans five decades, and she is well-known for her distinctive, deep contralto tone.

I should confess that I’m not a follower of Armatrading’s music; I stumbled upon this song on the soundtrack to the 1995 movie, ‘Boys on the Side’. Musically, it’s beautifully mellow and warm, and the lyrics are simple, but comforting. There are moments in life when you need these words to be spoken to you, or, when a friend in need should hear these words from you.

Armatrading said of the song: “‘Willow’ I wrote in West Palm Beach. At that point, I was somewhere in my life, both literally and metaphorically – geographically and emotionally – that I didn’t particularly want to be. I was in my hotel room one afternoon and outside my window there was this willow tree. At the time it seemed to be the one constant thing in my life, the willow tree. So, it’s sort of a love song for the tree.
